The moment one gives close attention to any thing, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.

Old Douglas Fir

Old Douglas Fir, zone plate photograph, archival pigment print

Hiking south from West Beach, along the Deception Pass State Park Sand Dune Interpretive Trail, which stretches between the saltwater shoreline of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Cranberry Lake, I came across this gnarled yet venerable, still-living Douglas Fir. It’s purported to be more than 850 years old.

In its presence I disappeared.
