Welcome!
My photographs have always been about observation, perception, and discovery of what isn’t immediately apparent. I want my work to transcend the documentary nature of the medium so that the images evoke a sense of mystery, stimulating the viewer to look closely, and then to look again.
Over a decade ago I started making zone plate images. Zone plate photography is a type of lensless photography that works its magic by diffracting light. The “halo” or “glow” that appears in the highlights and the blurring of edges, infusing the forms with a glint of the numinous, fascinate me. I love the elusive and haunting quality of these images and the dark beauty they convey visually.
With a zone plate, every image is an experiment. Since much of the process is unpredictable, and my attention is on the feeling of experience not content, I am usually amazed at the shapes and forms that have appeared in the print. But then the unexpected is a necessary condition for the imagination.
I still use film. My black and white images are made with a Lomo Lubitel 166, a cheap Russian medium-format twin-lens reflex camera, on which I mounted a zone plate in place of the lens. It takes 120 film. My color zone plates, however, are shot with a digital camera fit with a zone plate in the body cap.
